Anodyne is a Greek word which basically means to lose pain. The basic concept is that an anodyne makes you feel good. It is also called as an analgesic or a painkiller. This is made possible by decreasing the sensitivity of the brain to a level that will make pain unrecognizable.
Due to the numbness caused by anodyne, it is usually misused as a synonym for narcotics, opiates, and hypnotics. It is also used as a term for describing soothing words.
However, genuine anodynes are externally applied to the pained area. Some examples of basic anodynes are onions, leaves of violet, elderberry, lily, and root of mallows. There are also compound types such as anodyne balsam which is made of camphor, saffron, spirit of wine and castile soap. This is highly recommended for soothing pain, as well as for discharging other bad elements associated with the pain.
